Executive Craig Barrett, 65, and his successor, Paul Otellini, 54, are reviving sales after overestimating demand and building a record stockpile of unsold chips last year. Santa Clara, California-based Intel said it's getting more profit from plants and that the cost of upgrading them has been less than thought.

``This is better execution from Intel because they really faltered for nine to 12 months last year,'' said John Jacobs, president of Jacobs & Co. in Charleston, West Virginia, which held 194,997 Intel shares as of December. ``They've got a better gauge of their inventories now.''

Analysts expected first-quarter sales of $9.15 billion, the average of 31 estimates in a survey by Thomson Financial. Intel in January predicted sales of $8.8 billion to $9.4 billion. Revenue was $8.09 billion in the same period a year earlier.
